For gender reassignment procedures, patients need a confirmation of diagnosis from persons working in psychology or psychiatry. Also, the hormonal system must be checked to exclude possible contraindications.
Gender reassignment hormone therapy is performed in male-to-female transsexualism with estrogen tablets and a blockade of the testosterone receptor.
In female-to-male transsexualism, only testosterone is given. Administration of antiestrogens is not required.
The effects of gender reassignment hormone therapy are irreversible. Therapy is followed endocrinologically for two years before gender reassignment surgery can be performed. Hormone therapy is to be continued for life.
