Hypothyroidism is characterised by signs that may indicate an altered thyroid gland. Tiredness, listlessness or frequent chills are signs that should not be taken lightly. Other symptoms often include coughing and hoarseness or weight gain. A visit to an endocrinologist quickly provides clarity. Prof Dr Christian Wüster, an endocrinologist in private practice in Mainz, can use laboratory analysis to determine precisely whether and how the thyroid gland has changed.
Endocrinologist Prof Dr Wüster strongly advises you to consult a specialist. Hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism often occurs between the ages of 20 and 40. ‘The signs are all too often ignored.
However, if an underactive thyroid is not recognised, cardiac arrhythmia or other serious illnesses such as muscle atrophy are often the result,’ says Prof. Dr Christian Wüster.
There is no single cause of thyroid dysfunction. Instead, it has very different causes. For example, thyroid dysfunction can be congenital. Pregnancy can also trigger hypothyroidism. Iodine deficiency is often the cause. If the pituitary gland (hypophysis) is dysfunctional, this can result in an oversupply or undersupply of thyroid hormones in the body.
