KOBLENZ: Why is it important to carry out a bone density measurement at an early stage if osteoporosis is suspected? It does not initially cause any symptoms. However, the health consequences of osteoporosis can be considerable: those affected often suffer bone fractures or have to live with chronic pain due to even minor impacts. This makes it all the more important to recognize pathological bone loss at an early stage. Prof. Dr. med. Dr. h.c. Christian Wüster is a specialist in endocrinology and, as head of a hormone and metabolism center, is also the point of contact for patients from Koblenz with suspected osteoporosis. He explains: “The most important examination in this context is the bone density measurement. It provides information about bone quality and serves as a basis for planning further treatment steps.”
The results of the bone density measurement help the expert to estimate how strong the bones are and how likely it is that a patient will suffer a fracture in the near future. This in turn determines which treatment options make sense in each individual case.
“According to the current guidelines, we prescribe medication as soon as a patient has at least a 30% risk of fracture within the next ten years,” says Prof. Dr. Wüster. Non-drug measures are often sufficient as basic therapy in the early stages of osteoporosis. Dr. Wüster recommends regular physical activity and a balanced diet with protein, calcium and vitamin D to his patients.
